Meet the legendary “Annabel Lee” Fluorite — one of the most distinctive and sought-after fluorites ever discovered in the Illinois Fluorspar District.

Named after the hauntingly beautiful poem by Edgar Allan Poe, these remarkable crystals are famous for their dramatic color zoning: glowing golden-yellow cores wrapped in rich purple and deep blue cubic rims. The contrast is instantly recognizable to collectors and gives these pieces an almost illuminated appearance when light passes through them.

These specimens come from the historic Annabel Lee Mine in the Illinois Fluorspar District, which produced some of the finest American fluorite from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s.

Collectors love them for several unique features: • Electric color zoning — bright yellow centers with blue-to-purple rims • Stepped cubic growth and soft satin to glassy luster • Petroleum (hydrocarbon) inclusions in some crystals that fluoresce under UV • Often paired beautifully with sparkling calcite crystals

The mine operated from 1984–1995, and since its closure these vivid yellow-core examples have become especially prized among fine mineral collectors.

A piece like this perfectly captures the drama, rarity, and romance that made “Annabel Lee” fluorite a true classic of American mineral collecting.
